Scrape Your Tongue!

Sometimes just a small change to your morning routine can make a big impact on your day and overall wellness.

When you wake up in the morning, look at your tongue in the mirror. It's one of the main diagnostic tools used in functional medicine because it can tell you what's going on with digestion even before any changes manifest in your bowels. For example, if you notice a thick, excessive, unpleasant-tasting coating on your tongue can indicate a poisonous residue of undigested food in your digestive tract, showing that your digestion is weak and potentially the beginning stage of most diseases. On the other hand, a thin, slightly white, and moist coating is typical and indicates good digestion. Whether your tongue coating is normal or excessive, you should scrape off the toxins that generally accumulate after a night of sleep.

If you have never heard of tongue scraping, consider adding this to your daily morning ritual. Scrape your tongue every morning with a stainless-steel scraper (you can purchase through Amazon.com for just a few dollars) before brushing your teeth. Brushing your tongue doesn't have the same effect as a tongue scraper. It tends to relocate the bacteria or embed them in your toothbrush rather than remove them. Aggressively brushing your tongue can also irritate the taste buds. There's really no substitute for a special tongue scraper. Start from the back and slowly scrape it all the way to the tip, five to 10 times, removing as much toxic buildup as possible. The process takes less than 10 seconds. Tongue scraping gently massages the internal organs linked to different areas of the tongue and stimulates digestion by activating the salivary glands.
